La délégation a participée à plusieurs réunions pour évaluer la candidature d'Astana, qui propose une exposition sous le thème de « l'Energie du Futur ».
L'objectif principal de cette mission, partie cruciale de la campagne, est de déterminer la viabilité et faisabilité du projet d'Expo et d'assurer sa conformité avec les règlements du BIE.
Le rôle de la mission d'enquête est d'évaluer également le climat politique et social du pays et de la ville candidate, garant indispensable de la viabilité du projet d'Expo.

La délégation a écouté les présentations des 14 parties du dossier de candidature qui a déjà été soumis au BIE, concernant les objectifs, le thème, le plan du site, les plans de communications, le nombre de visiteurs attendu, le coût de la participation et la proposition d'utilisation du site après l'Expo.
Le Président du Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev a rencontré la délégation le 14 mars : « Nous sommes engagés à préparer et conduire l'Expo 2017 s'il y avait une décision positive. Nous le considérons comme un projet national. Vous aurez l'opportunité ces jours-ci au Kazakhstan de rencontrer des représentants de plusieurs institutions pour étudier le cas Astana, » a déclaré le Président Nazarbayev.
Le rapport final de la mission d'enquête sera soumis à l'Assemblée Générale après avoir été examiné en avril par la Commission Exécutive du BIE qui fera part de son avis. L'Assemblée Générale décidera quels sont les projets qu'elle retient. Une fois approuvé, le rapport devient le document de base permettant aux états membres d'évaluer les projets en vue du vote.
L'autre candidat pour l'Expo 2017 est la ville de Liège en Belgique, qui va recevoir sa mission d'enquête à la fin mars. Le pays hôte de l'Expo 2017 sera voté par les états membres en novembre 2012 lors de l'Assemblée Générale.
Expert delegation completes enquiry mission in Astana
The delegation of the enquiry mission of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) completes the one-week investigation and assessment on the candidature of Astana, Kazakhstan for the International Expo 2017 from March 12 to 16, 2012.
The delegation had several meetings to assess the application of the country and the city which proposed an exhibition under the theme of "Energy of the Future."
The main objective of the mission, a crucial part of the bidding process, is to determine the viability and feasibility of the Expo project and to ensure its conformity with the BIE rules and regulations.
The enquiry mission is to assess also the political and social climate in the candidate country and city that would ensure necessary support for the Expo project.
Member of the delegation include Mr. Steen CHRISTENSEN, Chairperson of the Executive Committee, H. E. Ambassador. Laura FAXAS, Delegate of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Yasushi IWATA, Delegate of Japan, Mr. Mauro MAIANI, Delegate of San Marino, Mr. Santiago MENDIOROZ ECHEVERRIA, Delegate of Spain and Mr. Vicente G. LOSCERTALES, Secretary General of the BIE.
The delegation also heard the presentations on 14 parts of the candidature dossier already submitted by Kazakhstan to the BIE, including objectives of hosting an Expo, theme, master plan, communication plans, visitors, participation cost and post-Expo use plan from the candidate.
The Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev met with the delegation on March 14.
President Nazarbayev said, "We are committed to prepare and conduct Expo 2017 in case of positive decision. We will consider this as national project. During the days in our country, you have the opportunity to meet with representatives of various agencies, to study of Astana."
The delegation also met with national and local authorities the trip, which include Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Masimov, head of both Parliament Chambers with the three political parties represented in the Parliament of Kazakhstan, and Ministers from different government departments.
The result report of the mission will be submitted next month to the Executive Committee of the BIE for review, which then forwards the report with advice to the General Assembly. The General Assembly decides which proposals the BIE will further investigate. Once approved, the report forms the basis of evaluation by the BIE member states during the vote.
The other candidate for the Expo 2017 is the city of Liege in Belgium, who will receive its enquiry mission at the end of the month. The country to host Expo 2017 will be vote by BIE member states in November 2012 at the General Assembly.
